With ambitious growth plans, the Locke portfolio will represent 18 properties by the end of 2024.
During the summer of 2024, Locke opened its sixteenth property, Locke de Santa Joana in Lisbon. Located in the city’s vibrant centre, near Avenida da Liberdade, it is Locke’s biggest project to date, comprising 370 apartments, guest rooms, penthouses, and suites. Social spaces include 10 food & beverage outlets, co-working, event & meeting spaces, a museum, and an outdoor pool with a sun terrace. A celebration of culture and art, the design concept, led by Lázaro Rosa-Violán, draws upon the convent’s history to retell its layered past.
AboundStudio was engaged to define the positioning of Locke de Santa Joana within Locke’s expanding European portfolio. Our task: shape a compelling narrative that honors its heritage while embracing Lisbon’s vibrancy. From the name and tone of voice to key touchpoints and activations, we crafted a story that reflects both past and future.

What does it mean to stay in Lisbon today? Inspired by the convent’s layered history, Locke de Santa Joana is a space of evolution—where old meets new, where tradition fuels innovation. Once a place of contemplation, it now thrives as a cultural and social hub. A retreat in the city, where moments of stillness and movement coexist in harmony.
Locke de Santa Joana embodies Lisbon’s soulful charm with the design-led approach Locke is known for. A place where light filters through arched windows, casting shadows on restored stone walls. Where the scent of fresh pastries drifts from the café, and curated spaces invite reflection, collaboration, and celebration. Where guests can start the day with a swim in the courtyard pool, immerse themselves in Lisbon’s creative scene, and end the night with a glass of wine in a candlelit bar.
Every element reflects the Lisbon way of life—authentic yet forward-thinking, steeped in history yet ever-evolving. The design narrative speaks in contrasts: heritage architecture meets modern materials, organic textures meet bold silhouettes. The name itself is an homage—Santa Joana, a historical figure known for her strength and independence, lending a powerful identity to the space.
